Belated Birthday Bash In the Slanghoek Valley

Its a treat to know that there are people who would post date their birthday celebration, just so that they can have one of my experiences for their special occasion. The lovely Suzanne from the Slanghoek Valley was just one of these special people.

Wanting to really spoil her friends and family with a Flour & Oil birthday experience, she opted for the next available date, which was over a month past her actual birthday.

For me, going to the Breede River Valley (as the larger area is known) is like stepping on what you would imagine the last bit of earth would be before heaven. The majestic mountains that divide the earth and sky, the windy roads through the vineyards, and the great expanse of countryside, create a completely ethereal experience for all who pass by.

For Suzanne and her family, it is simply called home.

Greeted by the most obedient dogs ever, we set up our cooking stations, and let her guests through a 3-course, Indian food course. They learnt how to make crispy samoosas, north Indian curries, and softest of rotis. The vibrance and excitement of this group was contagious.

The highlight however, was watching a speechless, teary-eyed, Suzanne try to respond to all the good wishes and prayers of her loved ones. Trying to convey how each of their interactions in her life mattered.

It makes you want to pick up the phone and send similar sentiments to your own loved ones. To not wait for a special occasion. Surely thinking of them today makes it special enough.
